Digestive Distress - Irritable Bowel
BACKGROUND
Jim, a 58 year old retired computer programmer, complained of bowel urgency after every meal. Daily, Jim would have between six and eight bowel movements and if he ate dairy products his symptoms would be much worse. He also stated that he would need to “run” to the bathroom whenever he was anxious or excited.
LIFESTYLE
Jim, now retired, would still spend a great deal of time working around the house. His wife describes him as a man that, “never sits still.” He exercises regularly at the gym and by walking. His diet is better than most – not many processed foods and an avoidance of dairy products.
OTHER SYMPTOMS
Neck pain, left shoulder pain, and headaches (two per week).
FINDINGS
Structural misalignments, excess energy in the small intestine meridian, nutritional deficiencies.
TREATMENT
Structural: Cranial therapy, chiropractic therapy and muscle rebalancing especially of the muscles of the spine.
Chemical: Herbs to soothe the digestive system, enzymes to aid in food digestion, a multiple vitamin and mineral.
Lifestyle: Non-stimulating activities - reduced television viewing.
RESULTS
Jim began experiencing more normal bowel movements and a decreased frequency of bowel movements within six days. After six months his bowel function is normal. He must still take the herbs for bowel soothing, and the multiple vitamin/minerals but he is off all other supplements.
COMMENTS
This is a good example of how the emotional state of a person can greatly affect their digestive function. It is likely that Jim has been an anxious person for most of his life. The reasons for this are not known since emotional corrections, although recommended, were not performed in this case.
