Menopause - Hot Flashes & Night Sweats
BACKGROUND
Sandy, a 48 year old accountant, complained of frequent hot flashes and night sweats. She stated that the night sweats would occur two or three times a night and the hot flashes would occur six to eight times a day. Both of these symptoms had been present for three months.
LIFESTYLE
Sandy enjoyed eating refined carbohydrates at every meal. This could include: bread, pasta, white rice, sugary snacks and/or candy. She did exercise regularly by walking, doing jazzercise or occasionally lifting weights. She also managed her life and job stress well.
OTHER SYMPTOMS
Occasional gas and bloating with certain meals, and fatigue.
FINDINGS
Nutritional deficiencies, pelvic and cranial faults, excess liver meridian.
TREATMENT
Structural: Cranial and pelvic adjustments.
Chemical: Specific herbs (milk thistle and dandelion root) to relax and support the liver, essential fatty acids, a multiple vitamin, calcium citrate (taken at night), and herbs to soothe the digestive system.
Lifestyle: Modify the diet to include protein at every meal. Carbohydrates were acceptable if they were unrefined and minimally processed (i.e. whole multi-grain breads and pastas).
RESULTS
By the end of the second week Sandy remarked that her symptoms were only 25% of what they used to be. By the end of four week she was symptom-free. She continues to exercise regularly and eat well. If she veers off her diet for more than three days the symptoms begin to return.
COMMENTS
Sandy’s case is straight-forward and thankfully quite typical. Sandy needed simple diet and lifestyle changes and support from specific nutrients. Many women will benefit tremendously from a similar program. As with most chronic problems, the patterns of dysfunction are very similar. The good news is that by supporting the tissues that need support and by not irritating already fatigued tissues with bad lifestyle choices, the body is more than capable of healing itself, often rapidly.
