Osteoarthritis
BACKGROUND
Bob, a 54 year old real estate agent, complained of chronic right hip pain for the last three years. His symptoms were present intermittently, worse with prolonged sitting and then rising from a chair, and worse with prolonged walking or running. Occasional right foot pain and right knee pain were also present. X-rays showed that Bob had some degeneration of his right hip joint consistent with osteoarthritis. Over-the-counter pain medications were sometimes helpful.

LIFESTYLE
Bob works out three times per week on the treadmill or Elliptical machine. His job requires him to sit in front of a computer for hours at a time, or drive long distances to meet with clients. Bob lives alone and consequently eats a poor diet consisting of many processed foods and many meals at restaurants. He is twenty pounds overweight..

OTHER SYMPTOMS
Occasional lower back and lower neck pain, Interrupted sleep, afternoon fatigue.

FINDINGS
Multiple spinal and extremity misalignments along with many hypertonic (too tight) and hypotonic (too relaxed) muscles; nutritional deficiencies.

TREATMENT
Structural: Bob required treatment twice a week for four weeks and then once a week for another four weeks to improved his structure and overall postural balance. Spinal manipulations, cranial corrections and muscle rebalancing were performed on each visit.

Chemical: Nutritional supplementation as follows: B-complex vitamins with high levels of thiamin (B1), essential fatty acids, MSM, digestive enzymes and chondroitin sulfate.

Lifestyle: Diet modification, home stretches and specific rehabilitative exercises.

RESULTS
Bob began to feel significantly better by the end of the second week. At the end of the eighth week he was able to exercise for fifty minutes without any pain in his hip. Occasionally he still feels pain when driving for long periods. His sleep and energy levels were greatly improved.

COMMENTS
In this case, it is likely that a good deal of the pain was the result of the propagation of inflammatory chemicals as a result of a poor diet. The good news is that treating the structural and chemical problems simultaneously will often greatly shorten the overall treatment time.
