BACKGROUND
Katie, a nine year old girl, was brought into the office by her father, Jeff. I was told that for the past three months Katie had been experiencing daily stomach pain that was constant throughout the day and in the mornings was often severe. Also, the symptoms would occasionally be worse when Katie brushed her teeth.
Katie was examined medically and after an endoscopic exam was told that she had esophagitis. She was given two medications, one for acid reflux (prevacid) and the other to coat her stomach. Neither of these had any effect.
OTHER SYMPTOMS
Katie was sleeping for abnormally long periods of time (11-12 hours) and needed to be aroused from sleep. Once awake, she often felt immediate pain. Her generally bubbly mood had also been absent.
FINDINGS
An AK examination suggested that Katie was suffering from a bacterial organism. Artecin and Berbercap were both helpful.
TREATMENT / RESULTS
Katie was told to take 1/2 capsule of Artecin in applesauce three times a day. Other treatments were not performed due to time constraints (a 20 minute visit was all that was available).
After the initial visit Katie had two excellent days, but then she quickly regressed and even seemed worse. She returned for her second visit where I found that she still needed the Artecin. On that visit I was able to do some structural balancing, so I wanted to see if the Artecin would now work more effectively. I was curious that there may be more than just what I could test in the office, so for the next visit I had Jeff bring in a sample of water from Katie's bathroom sink. I also wanted a pillow case and a sample of air from her bedroom.
On her third visit, Katie was about the same overall. The bacteria I had been checking, no longer bothered her - the Artecin had done its job. So, I checked the samples of water and air to see if they could be part of the problem. Indeed, Katie strongly reacted to the water sample from her bathroom faucet. That reaction was canceled by Berbercap (Oregon Grape Root). Katie can not swallow pills and Berbercap tastes extremely bitter. Thankfully I had some in liquid form for children. I desensitized Katie to the water sample and had her take some of the liquid supplement. After a few minutes, while working on her structural misalignments, Katie stated that she was feeling better. By the end of the visit, when asked again how she felt, she indicated by a distance between her hands that it was significant (about 75% from when she had come in). She was told to drink only bottled water and not to use the tap water in the house at all.
The next day her father said that Katie, "Woke up with a big smile on her face...his Katie was back!"
COMMENTS
One of the most important things to do for overall health is to cleanse yourself of unwanted organisms. In this case, Katie was overcome by an organism that neither bothered her father or her sister. This is not uncommon. We all have certain individual genetic strengths and weaknesses.
This organism was also not detected by standard diagnostic procedures. This too is not uncommon. In fact, the esophagitis that Katie was diagnosed with was real, but most likely resulted from the presence of these harmful organisms in her digestive system. That statement probably just knocked some medical doctor out of his chair. However, in my world, I see this scenario every day - get rid of bad bugs and many "unrelated" problems go away. Just think for a moment what might have happened to Katie had she continued in the Traditional Medical world and this organism had not been found? I am not anti-medicine (my wife would probably not be alive if it weren't for modern medicine), I am pro-health. Do your part to learn when traditional or alternative medicine is right for you.
So why did Katie get worse? Katie had two organisms. The one required the Artecin to kill, the other the Berbercap. There are over 400 types of organisms in the small and large intestine. They have many essential purposes, one of which is to keep each other in check. If an organism is allowed to grow beyond its beneficial boundaries, it will cause some sort of digestive problem. Here is where it gets interesting. When I gave Katie the Artecin, it killed one of the two organisms, but that first organism (along with all the others) was helping limit the overall growth of the second, more harmful organism. Once the first was reduced, the second organism grew even larger in numbers and the symptoms worsened. Had I initially given both supplements at the same time, chances are she would have been fixed after the first visit, instead of the third. I was reluctant to give Katie the Berbercap because of its strong taste and hoped that the Artecin would take care of Katie's problem by itself.
